Morning was abrupt & vaguely disorienting. Only the promise of the deepest, darkest espresso coaxed her into touching her feet to the iceberg pretending to be her bedroom floor. The cup was cradled & toast crumbs with sticky bits of honey joined their predecessors on a thrift-store tablecloth. She stood on a chair, pressing her forehead to the smudged glass of her kitchen window. Leaning in, tempting vertigo, gauging the offerings of a world patiently waiting for her. Feet once again on the floor, the chill from the window lingered on her skin, a pleasant reminder that she was awake.
